{"id":327,"date":"2015-07-06T09:55:09","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T16:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swahilipoetry.humnet.ucla.edu\/?page_id=327"},"modified":"2026-05-27T10:48:54","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:48:54","slug":"mulokozi-kahigi-1979","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/swahilipoetry.humnet.ucla.edu\/?page_id=327","title":{"rendered":"Mulokozi &#038; Kahigi 1979"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This anthology, entitled <em>Kunga za Ushairi na Diwani Yetu<\/em>\u00a0is both a discussion of the nature and purpose of Swahili poetry (pp. 1-62) and an anthology of the authors&#8217; poems (pp. 65-119) written in the early 70s \u00a0when they were young students in secondary school or college. The poems cover many topics of contemporary interest from personal observations about daily life to critical comments on\u00a0<em>ujamaa,<\/em> the\u00a0government policy to develop an indigenous form of socialism in Tanzania. \u00a0In all there are 44 poems almost equally divided between the two\u00a0authors.<\/p>\n<p>Both authors worked with TJH in Dar es Salaam in 1998 and helped with the meaning of difficult vocabulary. \u00a0Also, both gave permission for the republishing of their poetry in this project. \u00a0The translations are by TJH.<\/p>\n<p>The poems translated for\u00a0this project so far are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Mgogoto wa Leo\u00a0<\/strong>Today&#8217;s Call to Action (p. 65) by M.M. Kahigi<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sauti Kutoka Nje<\/strong> A Cry from Outside (p. 66) by K.K. Kahigi<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Wakati Jua Lingali Lawaka<\/strong> While the Sun Still Shines (p. 70) by K.K.
